My First Quilt Start to Finish (5 Evening Sessions)



Materials List for Class

  •       Sewing machine in good working order 
  •       Cotton thread coordinated to match selected fabrics
  •       Selected fabrics in quantities indicated by the “Buckbee” pattern.
  •       Students provide all fabrics for the quilt-top design and binding. Enrolled class participants receive a 15% discount on Woodside fabrics and tools for this project. Note: Batting and fabric for the quilt back are provided and included in the course fee.
  •       At-Home Quilter’s Tool Kit (select items will be needed in class sessions 2, 4, and 5). See description below…

At-Home Quilting Tool Kit

In order to complete this project, the following tools are required for all home-sewing and certain designated class sessions:

o   Cutting Mat: Self-healing mat, ideally 18" x 24" or larger (sessions 2, 4, 5)

o   45 mm Rotary Cutter (sessions 2, 4,5)

o   Good quality fabric scissors (all sessions)

o   Seam Ripper (all sessions)

o   Thread Snips (all sessions

o   Straight pins (sessions 2, 4, 5)

o   Binding clips – optional (session 5)

o   Ruler: 6" x 24" for long cuts (sessions 2, 4)

o   Measuring tape (sessions 4, 5)

 

  •       A basic tool kit for first-time quilters is available for purchase. The tool kit includes a mid-size cutting mat, a good quality 45 mm rotatory cutter with one replacement blade, straight pins, seam ripper, and mid-size “Perfect” fabric scissors (Insert link to online shop purchase and any other tools other instructors have noted in the past as necessary).

Session 1: Thursday, January 16, 2024: 4:00 – 7:00 PM

  •       Woodside Classroom: Fabric Selection, Tools in the Quilter’s Kit, Prepping Your Fabric, Basic Cutting, Reading a Pattern, Workspace Set-Up, Project Plannin 

Session 2: Thursday, January 23, 2024: 4:00 – 7:00 PM

  •       Woodside Classroom: Basic Block Piecing (pinning, seam matching), Quilt Block Construction, Pressing, Block Trimming, Tackling Corrections

Session 3: Thursday, January 30, 2024: 4:00 – 5:00 PM

  •       Zoom Session: Blocks in Progress, Show & Tell, Q & A, Troubleshooting. A secure  Zoom meeting link will be sent to enrolled participants.

Session 4: Thursday, February 6, 2024: 4:00 – 7:00 PM

  •       Woodside Classroom: Arrive with All Blocks Pieced and Trimmed, Quilt Top Assembly, Final Pressing & Setting, Preparing the Final Top for Quilting.

At the end of this session, all students will leave their completed quilt tops at Woodside to be quilted by a professional long-arm quilter.

Session 5: Thursday, February 13, 2024: 4:00 – 7:00 PM

  •       Woodside Classroom: Biding Basics, Attaching Binding by Machine, Mitering Binding Corners, Finishing Binding by Hand.

Instructor: Calle' Friesen
Instructor Bio: As a lifelong quilter and recently retired Professor of Education, Callé has extensive experience in teaching and learning and a passion for supporting beginners. Calle's first quilt was hand-pieced from clothing remnants using templates cut from a cereal box, then hand-quilted on a frame. Callé says, "The joy of making something with my own hands has never faded." In addition to quilting and sewing, she is a fabric, print, pattern designer and watercolor artist.
