Beginning and Intermediate Quilting Series

Both beginners and intermediate will need the following:
- Sewing machine
o Must be in good working order, and you must be familiar with operation
o Bring a ¼ inch foot, or be able to sew an accurate ¼ inch seam
- Rotary cutter & cutting mat (It’s a good idea to have a spare blade for the rotary cutter)
- Sewing thread
- Ruler for rotary cutting (6 x 24 in or similar), 6 ½” square ruler
- Basic sewing supplies (seam ripper, pins, scissors/snips etc.)
- Batting and backing for project (can be purchased later)
- Cutting mat (we have some, but if you want your own feel free to bring it)
Beginner specific items include:
- Start Quilting with Alex Anderson book
- Fabric for class project
Pre-Class (Saturday, January 24th, 10am-Noon)
- For Beginners in class only; Intermediates do not need to attend
- Introductions and General Housekeeping items
- Discussion:
o Basic terminology
o To pre-wash or not pre-wash?
o Needles, thread and fabric
o Review of sampler quilt
o Pick out and purchase fabric (15% off)
Class 1 (Sunday, January 25th, Noon-4pm)
Demonstrations: At the beginning of each hour, we will demonstrate a new block, and then the students will work on that block. We will learn the following four blocks the first day:
o Rail Fence Block (Pg 23)
o Nine-Patch Block (Pg 25)
o Square Dance Block (Pg 28)
o Nine-Patch Variation Block (Pgs 25-26)
- Homework: According to the book, try to complete most the following blocks prior to next class (Jan 31st):
o 8 Rail Fence Blocks
o 5 Nine-Patch Blocks
o 1 Square Dance Block
o 2 Nine-Patch Variation Blocks
Classes 2 & 3: (Saturday, January 31st, 10am-4pm; lunch included)
Demonstrations (1st hour)
o Log Cabin Block (Pg 30)
o Friendship Star Block (Pg 33)
o Flying Geese Block (Pg 37)
We will demo each of the blocks at the beginning of class. You will have between 11am and 3pm to work on your blocks. We will stop for lunch and talk about how things are going and what you have learned so far.
- Homework: According to the book, complete the following blocks prior to next class (Feb 14th):
o 3 Log Cabin Blocks
o 3 Friendship Star Blocks
o 3 Flying Geese Blocks
Class 4: Quilting & Binding Your Quilt (Sunday, February 15th Noon-4pm)
For this class, we will discuss the layout of the quilt, borders, quilting and binding.
You will have the remainder of the class to work on sewing your blocks together and adding your borders. If quilting your own project, you may work on that as well.
At 3:00, we will do a demonstration on binding and how to prepare your binding strips so you can bring it with you to the last class where we will bind your quilt.
Homework: Finish putting blocks together and add borders. Either quilt your project yourself, or have it quilted professionally. We encourage you to try it yourself as part of the learning process!
Class 4: Quilting & Binding Your Quilt (Sunday, March 15th Noon-4pm)
This class will focus on binding your quilt. Please bring your binding fabric (pieced if possible). We will start with a demo and practice binding, then let you bind your project. You can either machine or hand bind—it is up to you! The last hour we will have a show and tell along with a celebration of your completed projects!We will have a make-up class scheduled for Sunday, March 22nd should anyone need it.
