Japanese Sashiko and Boro: Tradition, History & Inspiration
with Carol Ziogas - Lecture & Trunk Show
....... And Classes
Discover the rich history and enduring beauty of Japan's traditional textile arts in this engaging
interactive lecture on Sashiko, Boro and much more.

Learn how these practical stitching techniques evolved from necessity into celebrated forms of textile art.
Explore the origins of Sashiko's distinctive geometric patterns, the philosophy behind Boro's layered and mended fabrics,
and how generations of Japanese families used these methods to strengthen, repair, and extend the life of their clothing and household textiles.
Through historical examples, and contemporary works, participants will gain an appreciation for the cultural significance, craftsmanship,
and sustainability embodied in these traditions. The lecture also highlights the tools, materials, and stitching techniques used in Sashiko, along with ideas for incorporating these timeless practices into modern quilting, embroidery, garment mending, and textile art. Whether you are a quilter, embroiderer, fiber artist, or simply curious about Japanese culture, this presentation offers inspiration and insight into two of Japan's most treasured textile traditions.
