We offer classes for everyone....beginners making their first quilt,those who want to learn new quilting techniques or those who just want to join friends in learning a fun project.
About our classes:
You can register on-line, in the store or call the store.Class and Retreat fees are due at the time you enroll and are not refundable unless you provide notice 2 weeks before the class begins (Some exceptions apply please read details of the class some workshops are NOT refundable).
Books, patterns, fabrics and notions on the class supply list can be purchased at a 15% discount upon your paid enrollment, through the day of the class. (Some exceptions apply)
If we cancel a class due to low sign up, we will refund your class fee. In most cases we need to have at least 4 students to have a class. If it's winter time and we cancel a class due to bad weather we will call you prior to class and either refund or re-schedule the class for a later time.

This introductory course is designed for new quilters who are confident with basic stitching on their own sewing machine but have not yet completed their first or second quilt. Our class will include a series of five sessions; four sessions will occur here in our Woodside classroom, and one session will be a virtual Zoom meeting. Our class will feature the beginner-level Villa Rosa Quilt Pattern titled “Sweater Weather,” measuring 62 x 74. The beauty of this simple pattern is that it can look sleek and modern or elegantly sophisticated, depending on the fabric selected. You will choose your own fabrics for this quilt top. This course is designed to walk new quilters through every step of the quilting process so that when the 5-week course concludes, students will have a complete finished project ready to enjoy at home or present as a gift! The course fee includes the quilt pattern, five instructional sessions (four in-person and one virtual), quilt batting, quilt backing, and long arm quilting service. You can use your own fabric for the top or students enrolled in the course receive 15% discount on fabrics and supplies purchased at WOODSIDE QUILTING needed for the class. Our sample is made of a simple blue and white fabrics for a winter snowflake theme. All classes are from 5:00 - 8:00pm unless noted. Beginning and Intermediate Quilting Series This class is designed for both the beginning and intermediate quilter. The beginner will learn: • Quilting terminology and techniques • How to safely use a rotary cutter to cut fabric • How to accurately piece seven different quilt blocks and how to join blocks to create a quilt top • How to assemble the quilt sandwich and options for quilting the top • How to bind a quilt The lessons learned in the beginning class will not only provide you with the satisfaction of completing your first quilt, but will provide confidence to do a more complex pattern in the future. For the intermediate quilter, you will: • Choose between 2-3 different patterns chosen by the instructor, OR you may choose one of your own that must be approved by the instructor.* • Learn techniques and instruction for organizing and piecing your quilt top • Review multiple techniques demonstrated for all of the patterns during class that everyone can learn from. • Have access to the instructor throughout the classes for questions and instruction as needed. * Quilt techniques allowed are: flip corners/ square in a square, flying geese, half square triangles, quarter square triangles and any straight line piecing. Techniques not allowed for this class include: curved piecing, applique or paper piecing. Class dates and times For the beginners, there is a required pre-class to talk about general sewing terms and fabric 10am-Noon on Saturday, January 24th. After class you may shop for your fabric (with a 15% discount!) Other class times are: Sunday, January 25th Noon-4pm; Saturday, January 31st 10am-4pm (lunch included!); Sunday, February 15th Noon-4pm, and Sunday, March 15th Noon-4pm. These are private Retreats for Club members only. Our Machine Embroidery Club is designed just for YOU! Whether you're in the middle of a small or large project or your wanting to start a new project. This Machine Embroidery Club is designed around YOU, YOUR projects and how we can help you achieve your Machine Embroidery Goals. The club meets the first Friday and Saturday of the month and is for ALL machine brands and is also more for the Intermediate Machine Embroidery user. We will explore techniques such as tiling projects, Quilting in the Hoop and much more. You will advance your learning & skills in no time! This will be an opportunity to try out new projects and more difficult embroidery techniques. This is a Hands on Club and embroidering during our Club Sew days! This is not just a lecture, so bring your Embroidery machine and lets start creating and having fun! There will be someone at the shop to help bring your machine in from your car if you need help. (When you bring your machine to the shop and you need help with your machine please lets us know) By joining our Machine Embroidery Club you also get LOTS of benefits. You will get 15% off your Isacord Embroidery thread, OESD stabilizers and patterns when purchasing them through Woodside. You will be the first to be able to pre-purchase new designs before they are released to the public. We will also have "Show and Tell" for what we are working on. Friday is work on your own but support is there if needed. The first 1/2 hour on Saturday will include a discussion on new designs, threads or stabilizers that have just been released as well as learning a new technique. We also provide a light lunch on Saturday. The Machine Embroidery Club Cost is just $75 for the year. We are meeting on a Friday and Saturday of each month based on the first Saturday of the month (example: if 1st is on Saturday we will also meet on Friday of the previous month) except December. We have a large room in the back that is just perfect for retreats. Come join us for some great quilting fun! Bright new LED lighting, all on one level and great for rolling your machine in. Our retreats are now at full capacity with 20 people in the Retreat Center. 2 people per 8' table.These are non-food retreats.You can only bring pre-packaged snacks into the retreat. Our Non-Food retreats are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. The hours are 9:30 - 5:00. You would receive our normal 15% discount. We have changed the days for setting up. You will need to wait until the day of the retreat to setup your machine. There may also be another class or retreat on the previous day. The doors don't open until 9:30 for the retreat. Thank you for giving our staff time to open the store and get setup for the day.

Want to learn the ancient art of Japanese Sashiko hand stitching? Then this is the class for you! We will start with the basics and an all in one beginners kit that is part of your class. With 2 needles, thread, thimble, a starter panel (12" X 12") and wonderful instructions. Then you can use this finished panel to make a small pouch or sewing kit for your future Sashiko stitching. Your instructor will first start with a little background of what Sashiko is all about and the numerous ways you can use Sashiko hand stitching in your future projects. In this 3 hour class you will come away with an understanding of the basics of Sashiko hand stitching and well on your way to complete your first Sashiko small panel. Join us and learn a way to unwind with a "Slow Stitching" method that will enhance your future hand stitching. You may also stay with us and stitch together until 5:00.

Woodside Quilting brings Judy Niemeyer Retreats to Central Iowa and Des Moines! Are you ready for a week long 6 day retreat to either finish, start or work on your Judy Niemeyer projects. The cost for this week long 6 day retreat is $799 with our Certified instructor May Black. Monday Feb. 23rd through Saturday Feb. 28th at 4:30 pm. This retreat is from 9:30 am - 8:00 pm each day (except Sat.) and includes Lunch all week. We will also be having fun at this retreat with some quilting trivia and prizes worth over $200. You will get 11 hours of quilting time each day. That is 66 hours for the week and 36 hours of instruction time from our Certified Instructor May Black. There is also a 15% discount for regular priced fabrics and notions for your projects. There is no sewing required to make this box. You can use your own fabrics or purchase fabrics at the store with your 15% class discount. And the chipboard DIY kit provided as part of your class fee. The fabrics used in the example are from Liberty Tana Lawn. Tana Lawn is a 240 thread count tightly woven fabric which is perfect for this application. It is not required to use this fabric but it's a wonderful fabric for the process. You need to use a high quality quilting cotton fabric for this class. It is SO much fun to create unique handmade gifts for family and friends or make for your own use. The Tissue Box 5” X 7" in size. Join us for our first “Spring Fest" Retreat Hosted by Woodside Quilting Des Moines Iowa. At the Conference Center in the Holiday Inn Express 2502 South Hulsizer Rd. Ankeny Iowa 50021. This is 5 fun filled days of pure pleasure sewing with your quilting & crafting friends. There is plenty of room to spread out with your projects. A great time to bring friends for an unforgettable experience. And one of the best parts is Marty and Warren aren’t cooking so we are going to sew with all of our quilting friends all week long. With this week long “Spring Fest” retreat, our normal club retreats will not meet at the shop in March. Instead those clubs members can sign up for this wonderful week long retreat. We want every club member to see what other groups in our shop are all about and what they do. How about a “Project Show” at the end of our retreat. We can show off what we have accomplished and see what all the other clubs do in their corner of the world. This is an open retreat for anyone to join us and you can work on any project. The retreat room will be open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm with 16 hours a day of sewing time every single day! Join us for 3 fun filled days of Creative machine embroidery with Claudia Dinnell of Claudia's Creations. Claudia will be joining us via Zoom this year. Come master Claudia's multi-hooping technique for perfect placement and alignment. Improve your hooping skills, better understand the features on your machine that allow you to tweak the position of a design within the hoop. Get tips and techniques that will make your embroidery exciting, fun, and flawless. Friday, Saturday and Sunday March 20th, 21st, and 22nd. 9:30 - 4:00 pm each day for instruction with Claudia including a light lunch (Sunday morning Brunch). You will then have the opportunity to continue embroidering until 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday with an optional $12 for an evening buffet dinner. The workshop fee is separate from the exclusive workshop design. We will enjoy 6 hours each day of wonderful instruction from Claudia to help you complete this exclusive design for her workshop only. This is for ALL machine brands but the minimum hoop requirement is 8" wide by 12" long hoop or larger. The workshop fee is $299 and includes the workshop, lunch on Friday and Saturday and brunch on Sunday. Your embroidery design cost is $139. The workshop fee does NOT include your workshop embroidery design or optional $12 evening dinner buffet, your fabrics, threads or other materials for your project. Whether you're in the middle of a small or large project or your wanting to start a new project. This Machine Embroidery Club is designed around YOU, YOUR projects and how we can help you achieve your Machine Embroidery Goals. The club meets the first Friday and Saturday of the month and is for ALL machine brands and is also more for the Intermediate Machine Embroidery user. We will explore techniques such as tiling projects, Quilting in the Hoop and much more. You will advance your learning & skills in no time! This will be an opportunity to try out new projects and more difficult embroidery techniques. This is a Hands on Club and embroidering during our Club Sew days! This is not just a lecture, so bring your Embroidery machine and lets start creating and having fun! There will be someone at the shop to help bring your machine in from your car if you need help. (When you bring your machine to the shop and you need help with your machine please lets us know) By joining our Machine Embroidery Club you also get LOTS of benefits. You will get 15% off your Isacord Embroidery thread, OESD stabilizers and patterns when purchasing them through Woodside. You will be the first to be able to pre-purchase new designs before they are released to the public. We will also have "Show and Tell" for what we are working on. Friday is work on your own but support is there if needed. The first 1/2 hour on Saturday will include a discussion on new designs, threads or stabilizers that have just been released as well as learning a new technique.
